RED WINE

58 GUINEAS CLARET
£13.95

Unmistakably claret on the nose; rich, dark damson fruit backed by good depth on the palate. Classic Bordeaux with a cedarwood element, dark fruit and balancing acidity which make it excellent with a good lunch.

'58 Guineas' was the reported price Sir Robert Walpole (First Lord of the Treasury) paid in 1713, to smuggle twenty hogsheads of claret into Britain, where it was highly prized by London's fashionable wealthy elite. Made from grapes grown on clay/limestone hillsides, vinified traditionally in temperature controlled stainless tanks at between 28 and 30 degrees respectively for about 15 days with a 7 day maceration, resulting in youthful colour and intensity. The wine is unoaked.

ALIANCA RESERVA DOC BAIRRADA
£13.80

An authentic blend of Portuguese indigenous varieties, predominantly Baga, which is a classic grape of the Bairrada region.

Attractive mixed berry aromas with spice notes. Vibrant plum and black cherry on the palate with liquorice hints, elegant tannins, and finely poised acidity. A medium-bodied, vibrant and characterful glass of red.

The grapes are vinified without being totally destemmed, and macerated for 5 days in cold temperatures. The fermentation lasts around 6 days. Produced from a blend of traditional local grapes. Fermentation in stainless steel. The careful selection and blending of varieties ensures an approachable but complex style and the relatively short time on skins in fermentation creates gentle tannins leading to this wonderfully drinkable profile.

WHITE WINE

AZIENDA AGRICOLA SCARBOLO PIPINOT PINOT GRIGIO RAMATO
£24.85

The drama starts as soon as you pour, this is a remarkably coloured Pinot Grigio. The nose is exotic and enveloping in a sweet and sultry sort of way … very melony, peachy, apricotty. Similar on the palate with a really soft and full ‘pillowy’ sort of sensation. It feels almost ‘thick’ in the mouth and you keep looking into the glass to check you didn’t buy the ‘with bits’ version! It drinks fantastically as soon as you open it but if you can keep your mitts off it for 40 mins -hour, it definitely opens up and offers even more. It has relatively low acidity and that full soft palate really sets it up for a spectacular food pairing … San Danielle ham … (Osvaldo make the best). The deep savoury flavours of the ham and its lovely saltiness work just fantastically with the flavours and textures of the wine.

Fully ripe Pinot Grigio grapes from 4 different vineyards are selected for this dramatically rich and expressive, deep ramato, style wine. Destemmed grapes, open top tanks, ‘pied de cuve’ directly from the vineyards used as a ‘starter’, gentle, manual pushing down of the cap daily. Fermentation starts in stainless steel and the wine is moved into large oak casks to complete part way through. Partial Malo.

CHATEAU DE SAINT COSME CONDRIEU
£65.95

A graceful, sleek and charming Condrieu showing wonderful complexity with perfumed hints of fennel, liquorice, elderflower, antique rose and anise layered with apricot and preserved lemon.

Steeped in history, Château de Saint Cosme is nestled in the southern Rhône appellation of Gigondas and has been in the Barruol family for over 500 years. In 1992, fourteenth generation winemaker, Louis Barroul took over the reins of the estate from his father. Today, he is one of the most highly respected winemakers in the Rhône Valley and is affectionately referred to by fellow winemakers of the region as the ‘Genius of Gigondas’. With great determination and flair, he showcases the great potential of the Gigondas terroir with his outstanding parcellaire cuvées from individual old-vine vineyard plots. The estate has great geological diversity, as it is exceptionally located at the crosspoint of two geological faults, which is very rare. Over the years, Louis has also established his own ‘negoce’ wines, seeking out the spirit of soils and vineyards, working painstakingly with small batch fermentations, advancing hand in hand with wine growers who love what they do, while adding that special touch. This has enabled him to explore and master different terroirs, from which he consistently produces pure wines with a precise sense of place, personality and balance.

CUVEE JEAN-PAUL DEMI-SEC
£11.25

The deliciously fresh and aromatic nose has intense citrus and pear notes. A soft palate with a delicate floral character.

The Gascony area of south west France is an excellent source of Colombard and Ugni Blanc which together provide a pleasant mix of tropical and herbaceous flavours. Vines are trained using the Guyot system and vigorous grape selection is used to capture the fresh aromatics and flavour. On delivery to the cellar, the grapes are cooled then undergo maceration on skins for 10-15 hours before pneumatic pressing and decanting to clear juice. We then keep the wine on fine lees to retain maximum freshness before blending into the final cuvée. To ensure freshness, we blend and bottle three of four times a year - an intricate process essential to maintaining stylistic continuity and quality, one which demands knowledge of how each component parcel will evolve. An additional level of residual sugar is permitted for the Demi-Sec to give a more rounded palate in comparison to the Sec.

DOMAINE BERTHELEMOT PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU LA GARENNE ltd
£89.95

The wine is delicate with gentle floral notes on the nose, clean and very pure fruit on the palate and nice structure - the steely acidity having been softened by the malolactic fermentation.

The Garenne vineyard is quite high up the slope of Puligny with thin stony soil over limestone bedrock so the style is quite tight and mineral. A Garenne was a wooded area of an estate used for hunting. Grapes are hand-picked and sorted twice, once in the vineyard and then on a sorting table in the winery. Domaine Berthelemot is a relatively new (2006) domaine of 7.8 hectares with vineyards in some of the classic AOPs of the Côte de Beaune. Chardonnay grapes are very gently and slowly pressed and the juice goes straight into cask with neutral yeasts. A slow, cool fermentation is followed by lees bâtonnage until July and he has separate temperature controlled cellars for reds & whites. 25% of the oak for whites is new each year.

Approachable yet very proper vintage Champagne and perfectly expressing the very particular character of Pinot Noir from the Aube.
